 Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

A former military airbase, the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is currently one of the busiest airports in Europe, serving flights to both Schengen and non-Schengen countries. The airport consists of one terminal split into different parts, with over a hundred airlines operating their flights from six runways.

In 2010, a library with over a thousand books in different languages was open, and travellers are also allowed to download e-books and music free of charge. It is the first Airport Library in the world and admission is free. An hour of free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the entire airport and may be used by travellers’ mobile phones, laptops or other electronic devices.

Schiphol Plaza is a huge commercial centre, consisting of a vast number of retail shops, restaurants and cafes. It is a popular area among travellers and non-travellers alike, with both local and international brands having set up shop there. Stores sell goods such as watches, jewellery, fashion apparel and accessories, liquor, local snacks, perfume, cosmetics, electronics and so on.

Alternatively, travellers looking to relax can head to the massage centre, where they can choose to enjoy a foot massage or try oxygen rejuvenation therapy, to rest their tired bodies after long flights. Business travellers who prefer to work on the go can do so at the lounges available, with facilities such as meeting and conference rooms, telephones and fax machines, up-to-date newspapers and comfortable areas to rest or work.

Schiphol Airport has also built an observation deck area right on top of the terminal building where travellers can go up to see stunning views of the airport. Additionally, there is also a national aviation museum, and an art gallery exhibition open to the public.

Travelling to and from Schiphol Airport is easy with a wide selection of transport options. Taxis can be found outside the terminal and is a convenient option for travellers with heavy luggage. The journey from the airport usually takes less than half an hour if there is no congestion. However, taxi fares are usually expensive.

Taking a train is the more popular, cheaper option as the service operates 24 hours a day. Tickets may be purchased at the ticket counters or vending machines located at the airport, and payment may be made via Euros or credit cards. There is also a bus station outside the terminal, with the bus arriving every half an hour. It makes stops near certain hotels, so do check the bus routes before boarding.
