 Soekarno-Hatta Airport

Jakarta International Airport – also known as the Soekarno-Hatta Airport – is located on the Indonesian island of Java and serves the Greater Jakarta area, including the capital city itself. Often referred as ‘Cengkareng Airport’ by locals, it is considered the main international airport in Indonesia and one of Southeast Asia’s busiest. Named after the first President of Indonesia (Soekarno) as well as the first vice-President (Mohammad Hatta), the Airport today has 3 terminals with a fourth one under construction and serves over 40 million passengers each year.

Terminals

Free shuttle buses are available to help tourists travel between Terminals 1, 2 and 3 – these run every 5-10 minutes. Terminal 2 is usually reserved for international arrivals and departures (with some exceptions) whilst Terminals 1 and 3 are used for domestic flights.

Services and Facilities

A limited number of duty-free shops can be found within Soekarno-Hatta Airport. F&B outlets like restaurants, cafeterias and bars are also available; these include A&Ws, traditional restaurants like Anglo Resto and Ayam Goreng Fatmawati, cafes like Bagus Café, Baskin Robbins, Beard Papa, Dunkin Donuts and many others. Other facilities available at Soekarno-Hatta Airport include ATMs, money-changing facilities, smoking lounges, prayer rooms and baggage storage facilities.

For travelers needing to some shut-eye before their next flight, an Airport Hotel is available in Terminal 2E of Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Rooms can be booked in time blocks, or over the night.

Getting to & from the Airport

Driving hide

Located only about 20km from the city of Jakarta, passengers have the option of taking a bus, taxi or driving over to the city from the airport. Those who opt to drive can find car rental agencies like Avis, Garuda Biru, Luts, Trac, Bluebird and others at the airport itself.

Buses hide

Those on a tight budget may want to consider taking a DAMRI shuttle bus to get to the city from the airport. DAMRI buses are air-conditioned and generally safe; they head to multiple destinations within Jakarta including Rawamangun, Gambir and others.

Taxi hide

For those wanting a speedier ride, the city is only about a half hour’s cab ride away in light traffic (but it may take hours if you meet a traffic jam). Taxis can be found at the taxi stand just outside the airport terminal, but tourists are advised to go through taxi counters at the arrivals hall to book an official airport taxi rather than hail one at the stand. Certain types of taxis can be pre-paid for at the taxi counter, which is the best way to avoid being overcharged.
