Dubai International Airport is the main air terminal in the luxurious United Arab Emirates’ city Dubai. It is considered the world’s busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic and also the third busiest airport in the world by the number of passengers. This serves as the hub of Emirates airlines and FlyDubai. Recently, the airport services a growing number of tourists visiting the city, a testament of its economic and tourism growth. Located in the Al Garhoud district, the airport terminal covers an area of about 2,900 hectares of land. It is operated by the Dubai Airports Company. It is also considered a great contributor to the city’s economy with about 90,000 people employed in the air terminal and more than 400,000 jobs supported. It is estimated that the airport contributes $26.7 billion to the economy which is equivalent to 27 percent of the city’s GDP.
The airport employs one of the best scanning techniques in the world: retinal scanning. This disables people previously deported from the country for serious cases to return under false identities.
There are three terminals in the Dubai International Airport. Terminal 1 is the main one which is used by major airlines arriving in the airport and is also the area where long-haul flights leave and arrive. Terminal 2, on the other hand, is dedicated for FlyDubai flights going to and coming from other parts of the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and South Asia, as well as regional and low-cost airlines. This is also where chartered flights operate. Meanwhile, Terminal 3 is exclusive for Emirates flights and tagged as the most luxurious compared to the first two. Emirates flies to various destinations in the world like countries and cities in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and also the Middle East.
You can easily go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 or vice versa since they are connected. One would need to take shuttle buses to reach Terminal 2. Train stations are only accessible through Terminals 1 and 3 but buses going to certain routes in the city are readily available near the baggage claim area. People can also opt to take taxis stationed outside the terminals.
Services and Facilities
Inside Dubai International Airport are various restaurants which serve different international cuisines and shopping areas which allow passengers to fill their stomachs and entertain themselves while waiting for their flights. For people travelling with children, there are baby care rooms in the airport which allow adults to privately take care of their young ones. There are also shower facilities at the airport specifically on the departure floors of Terminals 1 and 3. If you are spending more time inside the airport, a visit to the Zen Gardens will be rewarding and a way to reconnect with nature. Sleepy heads and travellers needing rest can try the Snoozecubes where one can relax and sleep in a comfortable bed which can be rented per hourly use.
Aside from these major services, the airport also has open-air gardens, business centres, prayer rooms, gym, spas, swimming pool, hotels, and even playing areas for children.
