Hanoi Airport

Nội Bài International Airport is the largest airport in the northern part of Vietnam. It is located 27 kilometres northeast of Hanoi, replacing Gia Lam Airport. The airport is a major hub for Vietnam Airlines and carriers that offer cheap flights like VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific. The airport, which was designed to accommodate nine million passengers, serviced a total of 19 million in 2014. The increase in the number of passengers was due to the opening of an additional international terminal last Christmas Day in 2014. The airport was opened on January 2, 1978 while Terminal 1 was completed in 2001. It has two runways, one made of asphalt and one made of concrete. In 2006, the second runway was opened. It hosts an Airbus A380 and Cargolux Boeing 747-8F. The airport is also operated by Nội Bài International Airport Operation. It has more than 30 passenger airlines including AirAsia, Air Macau, China Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Dragonair, EVA Air, Jeju Air, Lao Airlines, Mandarin Airlines, Singapore Airlines, TigerAir, and Vietnam Airlines among others. International destinations are Moscow, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong, Singapore, and many others. A total of 17 cargo airlines offer service in this airport like Asiana Cargo, Cargolux, Etihad Cargo, Hong Kong Airlines, and many others. Destinations under these airlines are Singapore, Luxembourg, Abu Dhabu, and Bangkok, among others.

Nội Bài International Airport has two passenger terminals that offer domestic and international flights. Terminal 1 serves domestic flights while the other terminal serves international flights. This airport is the second largest airport in Vietnam at 650 hectares after the 800-hectare Tan Son Nhat International Airport. In 2001, Terminal 1 was completed to handle nine million passengers annually.

Terminal 2 was constructed next, which was designed to serve more than 10 million passengers yearly. Japan assisted in building this terminal and assisted Vietnam with a development fund worth $504.27 million. It was inaugurated in January 2015 and has a freeway that links the airport to downtown Hanoi through the Nhat Tan Bridge.

Services and Facilities

Free Wi-Fi is available at Nội Bài International Airport. There are also few facilities at the airport; the ones catering to the passengers’ basic needs are found here including postal services, which is located near the arrivals hall. There are also money exchange counters in different parts of the airport.

Those who have forgotten to shop for souvenirs can buy at the airport, but these are a bit expensive than the stores in town. Restaurants are also located on the mezzanine level of the second level near the check-in area.
