 Phuket Airport

Being the gateway to the beautiful tropical paradise of Phuket means that Phuket International Airport, despite being rather small, is one of the busiest airports in Thailand (after Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang International Airports). The airport handles more than 2 million passengers a year, who come from all around the world for a holiday amidst the island’s renowned coastal beauty. Its global popularity means that Phuket International Airport is slated for major expansion works, though details on that are still murky (as of May 2015).

Terminals

Phuket International Airport consists of 2 terminals – Terminal 1 is used for international arrivals and departures, whilst Terminal 2 handles domestic flights. The double-leveled Terminal 1 is further divided into 2 sections – the Arrivals hall can be found on Level 1, whilst Level 2 is for departures.

Services and Facilities

Duty-free shops, currency exchange offices, lost and found centres, tourist information counters, luggage storage facilities, ATMs, pharmacies and more can be found in Phuket International Airport. Minimarts selling telephone SIM cards are also available, together with traditional payphones. The airport also offers free wi-fi (for 120 minutes) for its tech-savvy travelers.

Getting to & from the Airport

Driving hide

Car rental agencies like Alamo, Avis, Thai Rent a Car, Hertz and others can be found at Phuket International Airport itself. After getting your vehicle, set course for Phuket Town located only about 32 kilometres south from the airport.

Buses hide

Air-conditioned airport express buses going direct to Phuket Town can be found every hour just outside the Arrivals area of Phuket International Airport. Travellers wanting to take these buses simply have to buy tickets from a counter in the airport terminal, hop on when the bus arrives, and get off at Phuket Bus Terminal in the city to transfer to another bus towards their final destination.

Otherwise, private or shared minibuses are also available from Phuket International Airport. Buy tickets for your ride at the service counters located outside the Arrivals hall on the ground floor.

Taxi hide

For a hassle-free ride into town, head to the taxi stand outside the airport terminal for a cab direct to your destination. A ride from Phuket Airport to Phuket Town would cost about 400-600 baht and take a half hour or so, depending on traffic conditions. Do note that a 100-baht airport surcharge is applicable to cabs leaving from Phuket International Airport.

Private limousine services are also available for passengers wanting a swanky ride out of the airport. Again, tickets for this should be purchased from ground service counters at the airport.
