The Langkawi International Airport is stationed on the south-western part of the island of Langkawi in the Kedah state of Malaysia. Located at Padang Matsirat, it is within driving distance from Kuah, the town centre, and about a 15 minute journey to the famous Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah area. It is a no-frills, fuss-free airport consisting of just one passenger terminal and the only airport on Langkawi Island which serves flights in and out. The airport currently serves domestic flights to some destinations within Malaysia as well as several international flights, and that is set to increase in the coming future.
Besides serving its primary function, the Langkawi International Airport also appeals to tourists as an attraction as it hosts the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, a biennial international aerospace event for the aviation trade and its enthusiasts. It consists of aero-performances, conferences, seminars and award ceremonies, all of which serve to draw in crowds.
As Langkawi is a duty-free island, most travellers choose to purchase their goods outside the airport. Nevertheless, the airport duty-free shop is handy for those who wish to make last minute purchases. The duty-free zone is located at the departure area, and there are also several retail and dining options at Skymall, a stretch of selected shops catering specifically to travellers at the airport. At the arrival hall, popular coffee joints and Western dining options can be found. Passenger lounges are also available to satisfy the need for comfort and relaxation.
However, no public transportation is available at the airport nor on the island of Langkawi itself. From the Langkawi International Airport, you may approach the Airport Taxi Counters at the arrival hall area for assistance in booking a taxi to your destination on the island. Passengers are required to buy a ticket at the taxi counter and then advance to the taxi stand located outside the terminal. Car rentals are also available at the arrival area, and include cars from companies such as Avis, Budget and Hertz. Vehicle bookings can also be made online prior to your arrival at the airport, which may be more cost efficient.
Other facilities include a bank, where basic services such as foreign currency exchange are offered. Several ATM machines are available for those who wish to withdraw cash, and public payphones at the airport can be operated by coins, a prepaid card or credit card.
