Macau International Airport has been serving the special administrative region of Macau - located on China’s Delta Pearl River Region – since November 1995. With its strategic geographic position, Macau serves not just as the trading gateway into China from the West but also as a popular transfer point for those travelling between Taiwan and Mainland China, resulting in these routes being the airport’s busiest. Though the airport compound is rather small – so small that its runway had to be constructed on reclaimed land – Macau International is well-equipped to handle Boeing 747s as well as up to 6 million passengers a year, making it a popular freight and passenger transit point. It is also one of the few airports in the world to offer direct flights to North Korea (as of December 2014).
Macau International is served by popular Asian airlines including Jetstar, AirAsia, Tiger Air, EVA Air and many others, and is well-connected to most major cities in Asia.
Macau International Airport offers travellers duty-free shopping within its compounds at the King Power Duty Free store, as well as a variety of dining options (including Gloria Jeans Café, Mcdonalds, Food Paradise and the Macau international Airport Restaurant.) Numerous luggage storage facilities are also available in the airport, and these are open 24/7. For those fancying a puff on a cigarette before boarding, two smoking lounges can be found at the south and north ends of the airport – these are outfitted with technologically-savvy ‘Air Curtains’ that can regulate smoke-filled air such that it does not mix with clean air.
But if a bit of peace and quiet is what you’re after, the airport’s Plaza Premium Airport Lounge offers pay-in access – it is open to any passenger for a small fee. Enjoy hot beverages, light snacks, internet access and cushy seats in comfortable, luxurious settings. For a short power nap or shower, though, the Golden Crown Hotel China Macau is located just a sky-bridge away: simply walk over to the other side and check in for some much-needed shut-eye before your flight.
