The Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is situated about 40 kilometres from the capital city Taipei and is Taiwan's biggest airport. Previously called Chiang Kai Shek International Airport, it is one of the two airports handling travellers to and from Taipei as well as northern Taiwan. Taoyuan International Airport consists of two terminals, with Terminal 1 design was modelled against the Washington Dulles International Airport. Travelling between terminals is easy via complimentary shuttle bus service, but a faster alternative would be to take the skytrain as the journey and waiting times are much shorter.
Business travellers will be delighted to find a three-story building dedicated to solely to their needs.
They are allowed to arrive at the airport at a later time for their flight than the typically advised two hours by paying a fee, which enables them to park their vehicles directly at the building itself. Other facilities at the business centre include showers, a gymnasium and a sauna. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport and mobile phones can also be recharged at charging points.
For families travelling with children, there are play areas to keep the young entertained with adult supervision. Nursing rooms are located throughout the airport for mothers who wish to have some privacy while nursing their babies.
Additionally, luxurious massage chairs are stationed at waiting areas to help travellers relax. For those who have extra time to kill while waiting in transit or for their flights, there is a movie theatre at Terminal 1 screening a variety of shows and corridors along the airport displaying local Taiwanese artwork. Travellers who wish to spend some quiet time in worship may visit the respective prayer rooms for Muslims, Christians and Buddhists.
The needs of travellers with disabilities are catered for via elevators and ramps for easy wheelchair movement. If handicapped travellers wish to board the skytrain to travel between terminals, there is a specific wheelchair section to make their journey more pleasant.
Two hotels are located at the Taoyuan Airport to ease travellers in transit. The Evergreen Transit Hotel provides guests with a homely atmosphere to rest and recuperate from their flight before embarking on their next. The hotel also has a gymnasium with an extensive range of equipment for travellers who wish to work out, or they could head to the spa or sauna, before taking a comfortable shower to freshen up afterward.
The other nearby hotel is the Novotel Taipei Taoyuan International Airport Hotel, less than 10 minutes away from the airport. Travellers may access the hotel via free shuttle bus services. Amenities there include a business centre, high-speed internet, conference rooms, several restaurants and cafes, as well as a hair salon.
Taxi services are located outside the arrival area at both Terminal 1 and 2. Only taxis authorized by the Aviation Police Bureau are allowed to enter the airport to pick up passengers. Make sure that the taxi operates by metered fare, on top of the usual 50% extra charge.
The Taoyuan International Airport Access MRT System connects the terminals to both Taipei and Zhongli. The Taiwan High Speed Rail is also reachable via a shuttle bus from the airport. Car rental counters managed by two separate companies are located at the arrival hall areas at each terminal, where passengers may rent a car to drive or hire a chauffeur for their convenience. There are five separate parking areas for those who drive at both terminals, the cargo area and next to the Aviation Museum.
