Flights from Guangzhou

Usually the first city most travellers to China visit, admittedly Guangzhou is a city you might least likely fall in love with at first sight. Smog is engulfing the streets, which gives off a hazy city view. The urban overdevelopment of the city is evident with its unending flyovers and crammed tall buildings, which leaves no room for breathing space. Traffic is also horrible. However, beyond the smog and the crammed space, Guangzhou is home to fine churches, villas, and mansions that speak of the city’s character. Cantonese cuisine is also splendid. So don’t get lost in the smog and head off to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. After all, this might be the first and the least city you get to fall in love with in China, but then, this would also be the last. So savour the moment while you are at it.

Where to go

You wouldn’t want to miss Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, one of the city’s prominent historical landmarks. It is dedicated to the founder of the Republic of China and was constructed in 1931, built on the original site of Sun Yat-Sen’s presidential office.

Head southwest of Guangzhou and you will find yourself in the small Shamian Island, a sandbank island in the district of Guangzhou city. A historical area that speaks for the colonial European period, Shamian Island will make you take a step back in time. Its historical houses lined along pedestrian avenues, plus the presence of shady trees evokes tranquillity of simple living. Take a stroll in the Shamian Dajie, the Main Boulevard, take note of the Western style buildings, or you can simply scout for hotels, hostels, and tourist shops instead.

Cap your day off in Guangzhou and head off to Guǎngzhōu Tekkuan Live House, wherein you will be entertained by professional bands from varying countries such as Russia, Netherlands, France, and Hong Kong, playing jazz, rock, fusion, and pop. Take note that Tekkuan only opens three or four times a week.

Short Haul

From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, you can reach other destinations such as Hanoi in Vietnam, Seoul in South Korea, or Fukuoka in Japan, or Irkutsk in Russia. The fancifully built churches in Irkutsk such as the Ascension Church and Savior Church among others will astound you. As well, 19th century architectures within the city are worth a short stop.

Long Haul

From Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, you can also reach other cities such as Perth in Australia and Nairobi in Kenya. Perth offers you vibrant sunshine all day long, earning it the title sunniest state capital. You can simply sit by the Swan River and enjoy the best views from Kings Park and Botanic Garden, deemed as one of the biggest inner-city parks in the world. Or you can simply stroll in its 10 beautifully clean and uncrowded beaches. You might get overwhelmed with the sights and the lights so best put on your sunnies and admire the city from within.
