China - officially known as the People’s Republic of China - is a land of superlatives. With a population of more than 1 billion, it is the world’s most populous country (as of September 2014) as well as one of the largest countries in the world by landmass, with an area of more than 9 million square kilometres (as of September 2014). Located in Asia, China boasts a long and illustrious history, and its culture - even today - is deeply rooted in ancient traditions, despite its rapid rise to global superpowerdom in recent years.

For a short domestic trip, how about a visit to Macau, the Vegas of the East? Located on the southeast coast of China, Macau is home to more than 40 casinos (including the world’s largest casino The Venetian Macao). Despite its reputation as a Mecca for gambling, the city of Macau also sports numerous historical and cultural heritage sites as well as temples and shrines. Visit The Historic Centre of Macau, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage, to understand more about the oft-overlooked culture of this little city. 

If you’re not keen on casinos, Chengdu - the capital of the Sichuan Province in Mainland China - also calls for a visit. Liberally endowed with natural resources, Chengdu is sometimes called the ‘Land of Milk and Honey’ and is the natural habitat of the adorable and famous giant pandas. Have some ‘ma la’dishes –numbingly spicy but delicious –for a burst of intense flavor that the Sichuan people do best, visit and enjoy the antics of the bamboo-munching pandas or take a stroll down the river for some tranquility within the city.  Otherwise, a safe option for a guaranteed good time is happening metropolis Hong Kong. Party along the famous Lan Kwai Fong street, shop till you drop at the street markets and chow down on authentic dim sum.

If you’d prefer to leave China, a short international flight can get you to beautiful Sapporo in Japan. As the prefectural capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo has the 5th largest population in Japan and is the country’s northernmost city. Visit the city’s famous Winter Sports museum for a look at what happened behind-the-scenes during the 1972 Winter Olympic Games; have a look at the tranquil and picturesque Hokkaido Shrine with its thousands of cherry blossom trees and enjoy some refreshing Sapporo Beer at its origins.

For something a little further away, how about a direct flight to Frankfurt? Known as the most international city in Germany, Frankfurt is a cosmopolitan metropolis and a melting pot of diverse cultures. The birthplace of renowned author and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Frankfurt also boasts an amazing collection of museums and cathedrals filled with priceless art and artifacts.

Not into history? Perhaps Toronto, Canada, is more your type of place. As Canada’s largest city (and also one of the largest in North America), Toronto is home to a diverse population and consistently ranked one of the most liveable cities in the world. Boasting beautiful sand and cobble beaches, waterfront parks, galleries full of contemporary and ancient art as well as imposing architecture in the form of world-famous building the CN Tower, there is so much to do and see that even a long holiday would pass in the blink of an eye.
