Penang International Airport in Malaysia is one of the busiest airports in the country. It is located near the town of Bayan Lepas in Penang Island and was actually previously known as the Bayan Lepas International Airport. This Penang airport was opened in 1935 making it the oldest airport in Malaysia. It serves the Greater Penang area and serves as a hub for various airlines including Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Malindo Air.
The Penang International Airport has one passenger terminal building operating both domestic and international flights. Penang International Airport is located approximately 17 kilometres from the town of Georgetown which is the capital of Penang Island. A taxi ride from the airport to the city centre of Georgetown takes about 15 minutes of travel time and cost around MYR40-55. A cheaper alternative would be to take a local bus that leaves the Penang airport every 30 minutes. The local bus is operated by Rapid Penang and bus tickets are available at the arrivals hall costing around MYR2-3 depending on the destination. Due to the multiple stops, the travel time for taking the bus can take about an hour to an hour and a half of travel time. For travellers in a hurry or with bulky luggage, the taxi is the recommended choice of public transport.
