Saint Pierre and Miquelon, or the Collectivité territoriale de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France in the north-western Atlantic Ocean. It is situated near Canada, occupying a total area of 242 square kilometres and a population of about 6,080 according to the 2011 census. The capital is Saint Pierre.

The nearest point from the territory to Metropolitan France is Brest, about 3,819 kilometres away, and is nearer to Canada, situated 25 kilometres from the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland.

Where to go

There are several guided tours to choose from in Saint Pierre and Miquelon. There are excursions from Saint Pierre to Île aux Marins, guided walks about the heyday of the Grand Bank and inshore fisheries, or take a step back into the prohibition era. There are also walking tours through the old areas of the town, and visitors can learn about how the unique houses in Saint Pierre evolved, and how the way of life and climate influenced the local architecture. One particularly adrenaline-filled activity is exploring le Grand Colombier and the islets surrounding Saint Pierre while on board a nine-metre sailboat. This activity is available for both seasoned experts and beginners. Hikers might also be interested to join walks through the Valley of the Seven Ponds in Saint Pierre, The Cape in Miquelon, and Grand Barachois in Miquelon-Langlade. Those who will participate in these walks are recommended to bring extra clothing and waterproof footwear, as well as other necessities such as water and snacks.
