The Agatti Aerodrome is located on the southern end of Agatti Island, in the union territory of Lakshadweep in India. The Agatti Aerodrome is the only airstrip in the archipelago, which lies off the west coast of India.
The Agatti Aerodrome was built in the year 1987-1988 to accommodate the Dornier 228, which is a type of aircraft. It was inaugurated on April 16, 1988. The construction of the Terminal Building, Air Traffic Control Tower and related structures started in the year 2006; however, the construction of the Terminal Building was stopped because of a proposed extension of Runway & Basic strip.
The Agatti Island is a part of the Lakshadweep Islands in India and it is the smallest union territory in the country. It is such a one of a kind destination as the island is so remote that the population does not even exceed a thousand. Visitors are required to obtain Entry Permit from the Lakshadweep Administration for entering or visiting the island. The Entry Permit is issued based on the visitor having a confirmed place to stay, which is usually the Agatti Island Beach Resort.
How to get around within Agatti
Being a very remote island, travellers can only get to Agatti Island via air and water. There are no advisable means of land transportation within the island as it is a very small territory. There are flights and helicopter services that will gladly bring visitors to the island when they are visiting. There are also other vessels that will bring visitors to the island that have First Class and Deluxe Class cabins, equipped with seating, cafeterias, bars, and entertainment lounges.
