The Alamosa Airport, more formally known as the San Luis Valley Regional Airport, is a non-primary commercial service airport in the City and County of Alamosa in the state of Colorado. It is a public airport serving the immediate vicinity of Alamosa, elevated at 7,539 feet. It has two runways; one is asphalt measuring some 2,597 by 30 metres, and one dirt runway measuring 975 by 30 metres. The airport is owned by the city government and is subsidised by the Essential Air Service program. Great Lakes Airlines is the sole provider of regional commercial flights between Alamosa and the cities of Denver and of Farmington.
The Colorado Gator Farm – The Colorado Gator Farm is an alligator farm and reptile park located some 25 miles outside of Alamosa where some 400 alligators and dozens of exotic reptile species live. The farm and park is also a rescue facility that nurtures reptiles that have outgrown their homes. Recently, the farm has constructed a bio-dome that now acts as a greenhouse for various tropical floras.
Zapata Falls – Found some 40 minutes outside of Alamosa, off Highway 150 in Mosca, the Zapata Waterfalls is a breath-taking site to check out when visiting the area. The falls will take tourists to their roots – dwelling on lush green forests alongside animals and nature itself. Upon reaching the sign for the falls, travellers will need to take a trip up the mountainside thereafter a hiking trail, to check on the beautiful falls. From there, a scenic vista of the town and the falls will behold the visitors.
The Rio Grande Scenic Rail Road – Located in Alamosa, this train runs parallel with the main street. It is primarily an excursion train, with trips that depart every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
How to get around within Alamosa
The best way to get around the county is through a private vehicle. Roads vary from two-way lanes to even narrow one way lanes that are alternately paved and unpaved. Moreover, the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is available as well, although train rides here are mostly used for excursion purposes. Walking is also very much suggested, especially when going around the town centre.
