What to see and do

Stockholm has come a long way from its Viking beginnings in the Stone Age – the city today is a top tourist destinations in Europe, and the host of the distinguished annual Nobel Prize ceremonies and banquet. Stockholm is also famous for its thriving arts culture, with countless museums, galleries and home-grown boutiques producing some of the world’s best art, architecture and fashion.

If in Stockholm, don’t miss a visit to the famous Vasa museum, home of the preserved 17th-century warship Vasa (after whom the museum was named). The Vasa was a beautiful Swedish warship built in the 1600s by the then-King of Sweden, who had it lavishly decorated and armed to the teeth as a symbol of his ambitions for the country. Unfortunately the ship sank on its maiden voyage due to structural problems, and nobody got to admire it till it was recovered more than 300 years later. The bedraggled ship was then restored to its former glory and set up in its place of honor in the museum, where it is now admired by more than a million visitors a year. Witness the magnificence of this unfortunate ship that never quite fulfilled its destiny in war, but travelled through time to serve its purpose as a symbol of Stockholm.

After the Vasa, other noteworthy sites in Stockholm include the scenic City Hall, old town Gamla Stan, Fotografiska, the ABBA museum and many more.
