Travelling to Chennai

Best time to visit Chennai

Chennai has a tropical climate with three distinct seasons: monsoon, summer, and winter. The best time to visit Chennai is during the winter months of November to February, when the weather is cool with temperatures ranging between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. It is also the best period to join in the local festivities such as Pongal, a harvest festival every January, and December Season, a unique music and dance festival taking place from mid-December to mid-January. While it is fun to travel during this period, it is also considered a peak season so expect higher costs of Chennai flights and hotels.

As for the shoulder season, March to June are the ideal months when the rates of Chennai flights and accommodations are on average. When travelling during these months, be prepared for the hot weather with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius. At night, the air is still humid but the sea breeze somewhat neutralises it.
