Michigan is a U.S. state located in the Great Lakes region. It has a total area of 96,716 square miles, making it the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River. Additionally, it is the only state that comprises of two peninsulas; the Lower Peninsula, and the Upper Peninsula. The two are separated by the Straits of Mackinac, an 8-kilometre channel joining Lake Huron to Lake Michigan.  The capital is the city of Lansing, but the largest city is Detroit. Michigan is known to be the centre of the U.S. automotive industry, as it home to the three major automobile companies in the country.

 

What to see & do

Michigan’s Adventure – Michigan’s Adventure is the largest amusement park in Michigan. It is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company. The amusement park is located in Muskegon County, and covers 250 acres halfway between Muskegon and Whitehall. The amusement park features 53 rides and an outdoor water park called WildWater Adventure. One of the most notable rides in Michigan’s Adventure is the wooden roller coaster Shivering Timbers.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park – In Grand Rapids Township is a 132-acre botanical garden and outdoor sculpture park called Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. It is also commonly referred to as Meijer Gardens. It contains, aside from the outdoor gardens, a 30-acre outdoor sculpture park that features over 170 sculptures, the Lena Meijer Conservatory, a five-storey, 15,000-square-foot facility that houses tropical plants from around the world divided into three themes, the Frederik Meijer Gardens Ampitheater, and the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden. 

Detroit Zoo – Detroit Zoo is run by the non-profit organization Detroit Zoological Society, which has a mission of ‘celebrating and saving wildlife’. The zoo is located about 3.2 kilometres north of Detroit city limits, and takes care of over 3,300 animals over 280 species. Apart from Detroit Zoo, DZS also handles the Belle Isle Nature Zoo in Detroit.

 

How to get around within Michigan

The best way to get around Michigan is by car, whether you choose to drive your own private vehicle or rent one upon arrival. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to make do without an automobile. The most extensive public transit system serving Michigan is the Greyhound bus network, but several of the larger cities also have their own local bus services and other local transport. For example, Detroit also has light rail. Amtrak offers daily rail service through three routes to Michigan from its hub in Chicago.

The primary airport serving Michigan is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, also called Detroit Metro Airport or simply DTW. It is the state’s busiest airport, served by Air Canada Express, Air France, Alaska Airlines, American Eagle, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, US Airways, and Virgin Atlantic. The airport receives flights from other airports all over the United States of America, as well as from airports in Toronto, Canada, in Nagoya, Japan, and from the airports in Paris, France and London, England. Additionally, Michigan has nine international crossings with Ontario, Canada.
