Pays de la Loire, though one of the 27 regions in France, is not a historic region. It is an 'artificially created' region (like the Rhône-Alpes and Midi-Pyrénées), made in the late 20th century to serve as a zone of influence for its capital city Nantes. The region comprises of the following provinces: part of Brittany, Anjou, Maine, part of Poitou, part of Perche, and part of Touraine. Aside from its capital Nantes, other major communities in Pays de la Loire are Angers, Le mans, La Roche-sur-Yon, Cholet, Saint-Nazaire, and Laval.

Château des ducs de Bretagne - Located on the right bank of the Loire River in Nantes is the Château des ducs de Bretagne, or the Castle of the Dukes of Britanny. It was the centre of the historical province of Brittany. The castle is listed as a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture since 1862. It also houses the Nantes History Museum, which exhibits over 850 objects that represent the past, present, and future of the city.

Equestrian-related activities - Pays de la Loire offers plenty of racing events, racecourses, horsebreeds, and trotters, more than any other French region. The École Nationale d’Équitation, the French National Riding School, is the most prestigious destination for equestrian lovers. The school boasts of 16 outdoor arenas, 7 indoor arenas, and 400 horses. Watch professionals saddle their horses and make their way through the arena, or try it out for yourself.

Brière Regional Natural Park - Covering 154 miles of lower Brittany, Brière Regional Natural Park is the second largest area of marshland in the world. It is known for the wide diversity of flora, fauna, and birdlife in the area. In fact, Brière Regional Natural Park is a stop-over for over 50 species of bird that migrate between Northern Europe and Africa.

Explora Parc, Saint-Jean-de-Monts - The adventure park located in a pine forest on the beach is a prime spot for families with kids, or even those who are kids at heart! Go zip-lining down the from up to 40 feet above the ground, climb the trees, go swimming in the sea, or try your hand at tennis or archery.

Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine - The Bioparc zoo in Doué-la-Fontaine houses over 1,000 animals of 70 species. Many of the residents were born in the zoo, which is dedicated to biodiversity conservation, increase awareness of endangered species, and to foster the relationship between humans and our cousins in the wild.

How to get around within Pays de la Loire

Bus service will take travellers to different communes of the region. There is also taxi service, but this can be quite an expensive means of transportation, especially if you intend to really get around the region. The most efficient way of exploring the provinces and cities of Pays de la Loire is by renting a vehicle.

Nantes Atlantique Airport, formerly known as Aéroport Château Bougon, is the primary international airport serving Pays de la Loire. The aviation facility is located in Bouguenais, 8 kilometres southwest of Nantes. Many airlines, including Air France, Air Transat, CityJet, easyJet, Jetairfly, Ryanair, Volotea, Vueling, and Royal Air Maroc, operate from cities all over Europe to Nantes Atlantique Airport.
