Puerto Princesa International Airport serves the city of Puerto Princesa (meaning Princess Port in Spanish), capital of the island province of Palawan in the Philippines. Despite its rather small size, Puerto Princesa Airport sees bustling air traffic – the little airport is the gateway to the treasure trove of natural attractions that can be found in Palawan, from the famous subterranean river and Tabon Caves to the Tubbataha Reefs and the gorgeous pristine beaches and rock cliffs of El Nido. As such, Puerto Princesa Airport handles more than a million passengers annually and is slated for further expansion works (as of August 2015).
Puerto Princesa Airport isn’t located too far from the city of Puerto Princesa, so getting to and from the airport is easy. Tricycles can be found right outside the airport terminal – these can either take you into Puerto Princesa city, or – for those heading to El Nido – on to the San Jose Terminal. From there you can grab another bus, van or shuttle that takes you into El Nido (the ride would take about 5-6 hours).
What to see and do
There’s no shortage of things to see and do in gorgeous Palawan. In Puerto Princesa itself, there’s the amazing Subterranean River National Park – also known as the Underground River – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island’s most popular attractions. A stunningly gorgeous natural formation, the Subterranean River Park features limestone karsts, caves, green forests, rock formations and of course, the spectacular underground river, one of the longest of its kind in the world. Expect clear turquoise waters accented by mysterious-looking rocks decorated with lush greenery, with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites overhead.
Next, check out another one of the island’s amazing UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Tabon Caves, where evidence of mankind’s first foray into Southeast Asia more than 47,000 years ago was found. This myriad of limestone caves – more than 200 in total - in Western Palawan had produced fossils from Pleistocene-era homo sapiens (including the famous Tabon Man) thought to be the earliest humans to inhabit the Philippines.
Tired of UNESCO World Heritage sites? Then grab a bus to El Nido to begin the tropical vacation of your life surrounded by the stunning coastal beauty Palawan is famed for. Once voted as the ‘Best Beach and Island destination in the Philippines’ by CNNGo, the region of El Nido could pass off as a scene of paradise. With its gorgeous turquoise lagoons, secluded pristine beaches, undiscovered islands, coral reefs and amazing rock formations, it’s the perfect place for a vacation spent kayaking, lazing on the beach, snorkeling, diving, island-hopping, or just relaxing with a fresh coconut in hand. So amazing are the geographic and biological wonders of El Nido that the whole region was given Protected Area status by the Philippine government, so you can be sure its not something you want to miss!
