San José is the largest and capital city of Costa Rica. It is the seat of the national government as well as the political, transportation and economic centre of the country.

The city of San José is not usually top of mind when making plans to holiday in Costa Rica. However, despite its less than sterling reputation, San José is a city with a lot to offer its visitors. While it may be more well-known for its natural wonders and beauty, the city is modern and contemporary like other capital cities. It has a thriving food scene particularly a growing culture beer. It also is a haven for arts and culture with many galleries, museums and historical sites.

San José is served by two airports:

  • San José Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO) – Officially known as the Juan Santamariá International Airport, it is the primary airport in San José. The airport is located approximately 17 kilometres from the city centre and would take about 16 minutes of travel time by taxi. A taxi ride would cost around USD22-27 (MYR95-120). A cheaper alternative would be to take the public bus for USD1 (MYR5) with a travel time of about 31 minutes or travel by train for USD1 (MYR5) that would take about 50 minutes to the city centre. There are currently no airlines flying direct from Malaysia to the Juan Santamariá Airport. Other airlines flying to this airport include British Airways, Delta, American Airlines, United and Copa.
  • San José Tobias Bolanos Airport (SYQ) – Officially known as the Tobías Bolaños International Airport, it is the secondary airport serving San José. The airport is located approximately 9 kilometres from the city centre. A taxi to the city centre from the airport would cost USD12-15 (MYR50-65) and take about 9 minutes of travel time. There are also no airlines flying direct from Malaysia to the Tobías Bolaños Airport. There is currently only one airline operating flights to and from this airport, Nature Air.

Best Time to Visit San José

The weather is San José, Costa Rica is generally steady with an annual average temperature of 23 to 26 degrees Celsius during the day and dropping to between 15 to 17 degrees Celsius at nightfall. However, San José sees more rainy days in the year than sunny days. A lot of rainfall should be expected between May to November with the dry season short from January to March.

So when it comes to booking your holiday to San José, the best time to visit would be from December to April where you will see the most sunshine. This season would be excellent weather for outdoor activities such as water sports at the beach or trekking through the wildlife. There are also many events that take advantage of this dry season such as the Festival de Las Luces in December, Coffee Cup in January, San Isidro del General Fiestas in February and the International Arts Festival in March. However, this is also the peak travel season so flight prices and room rates may be higher.

The rainy season from May to November is still a good time to visit San José. Not only would you have the advantage of cheaper travel costs, but there will also be fewer tourists in the city. It is also a beautiful time to visit as this season is often referred to as the "green season" with beautiful foliage around the city. Some key events during this period include the San Isidro Anniversary in October and the Oxcart Parade in November.

Things to do in San José

There are many things to do and sights to see while on vacation in San José, Costa Rica. Here are just a few of the more popular tourist spots in San José:

  • Parque Nacional Simón Bolívar – Also known as Zoológico Simón Bolívar, it is a 34-acre urban park in San José. It has the country’s oldest botanical garden and zoo. It is home to many animals such from mammals to birds and amphibians to reptiles. The park is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Costa Rican Centre of Science and Culture – A famous museum officially known as the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica. It is, as the name suggests, Costa Rica’s national museum. It has exhibits on archaeology, culture, military and wildlife. The location of the museum itself is also a destination as it is housed in the Bellavista Fortress which is an ochre coloured and crenellated building that was originally used as military barracks. The museum is open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. On Sundays, it opens half an hour late at 9 am.
  • San José Central Market – The country's largest market which is bustling with vendors and buyers of food, souvenirs and trinkets. This maze-like market offers anything from fresh produce and fish to local handicrafts and herbal remedies. The market is open six days a week from 6:30 am to 6 pm. It is closed on Sundays.
