What to see & do
Turaif does not have much destinations and points of interest, sans various establishments and public buildings. There is, however, a large hotel serving the town, the Al-Mudwah Hotel along Highway 85. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia, Turaif’s mother country, do have an abundance of sites that are worth noting. These include the following:
Mada'in Saleh - Mada'in Saleh, also called the Al-Hijr or Hegra, is a pre-Islamic archaeological site located in the Al-Ula sector, within the Al Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia. The site constitutes the kingdom's southernmost and largest settlement after Petra, its capital, while traces of Lihyanite and Roman occupation before and after the Nabatean rule, respectively, can also be found here. In 2008, the UNESCO proclaimed the site as a site of patrimony, becoming Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage Destination.
Al Masjid an Nabawi, or the Prophet's Mosque - The Al Masjid an Nabawi, also known as the Prophet's Mosque, is a beautiful mosque set and originally built by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the city of Medina. Al-Masjid an-Nabawi was the second mosque built in the history of Islam and is now one of the largest mosques in the world. It is the second-holiest site in Islam, after al-Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. Apart from the main mosque, other ornate and beautiful structures are set in its vicinity, including the Rias ul-Jannah (Garden of Paradise), minarets, Rawdah, Mihrab, and others.
Kaaba - Considered as the most sacred site for Islamic peoples, the Kaaba is a cuboid place on the centre of the Al Masjid al Haram mosque. Wherever they are in the world, all Muslims are expected to face the Kaaba, especially when praying. At least once in their lifetime in their Hajj pilgrimage, a Muslim should visit the Kaaba.
