Surat Thani Airport serves the city of Surat Thani, capital of the Thai province of the same name. Located in southern Thailand on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Surat Thani translates to the ‘city of good people’ in English (which has since become the city’s nickname). An area that has seen human inhabitation since the 10th century, Surat Thani is believed to once have been a provincial capital of the mighty ancient Indonesian Srivijaya Empire. Today, Surat Thani city boasts a population of about 125,000 and is the 8th largest city of Thailand (as of June 2015).
The province’s main air transport hub, Surat Thani Airport, is both a military air base for the Roy-al Thai Air Force and a commercial airport. There is only one terminal in Surat Thani Airport and both international and domestic flights are handled in the same place. The airport accommodates more than 1 million passengers annually, and is located in Phun Phin District, about 20 kilometres west of Surat Thani city.
The easiest way travellers can get to Surat Thani city from the airport is by cab. Simply hail one from outside the terminal - the ride might take an hour or so depending on traffic conditions, and cost approximately 1000 Thai baht. Car rental agencies can also be found at the airport terminal itself. Otherwise, public buses and shuttles are available for those who want a cheaper option for transport.
Those up for an adventure may choose to rent a tuk-tuk - a sort of open auto-rickshaw - to take them into town instead.
What to see and do
Though usually overlooked in favour of sunny tropical paradises like Koh Samui and Koh Phan-gan, Surat Thani is not without charm of its own. Sitting square in an area rich in natural attrac-tions like forests, mountains, lakes, basins, limestone cliffs, waterfalls and more, Surat Thani can be a great place to experience nature with Thailand’s natural residents, the wild elephants, Ma-layan sun bears, leopards and tigers.
Get in touch with Mother Earth at Khao Sok National Park, one of the country’s most pristine and beautiful natural regions. Known as ‘Thailand’s Guilin’ due to the similarity the limestone mountains bear to China’s gorgeous Guilin, Khao Sok National Park offers everything you can dream of for an adventure holiday - from exciting rock caves, sparkling lakes, plenty of flora and fauna to the immense Namtok Sip Ed Chan waterfall and much more.
