The gold-mining town of Kalgoorlie is home to the giant Super Pit at Fimiston, one of the world’s largest open-cast gold mines. Kalgoorlie’s climate is very different to the coastal towns of Western Australia, and is desert-hot. The town is steeped in colonial and mining history and still has the feel of a frontier town. Nearby are the ghost towns of former mining settlements, such as Coolgardie.

If you want a true Aussie experience, then you should head to the mining town of Kalgoorlie, a six hour drive east of Perth in Western Australia’s outback. The town was founded in the late 1800s during the Gold Rush era and to this day it is a place whose main industry in mining. Kalgoorlie is a town where you can still see swinging saloon doors and drink a beverage in a typical Aussie pub. Visit the town’s Super Pit for a chance to look at a giant open cut mine.

This is the Super Pit - the biggest open cut pit in the Southern Hemisphere. Amazing to experience
