Siena is a very charming town in Italy. I stopped there for two hours during tour and had an amazing time. In the main piazza there are plenty of restaurants. I then walked to the basilica to view the church and then climbed to the top of the old church tower which has spectacular views. If you are staying in the Tuscany region for awhile this is definitely worth a half day visit as it’s just less than an hour from Florence.
(60 km 1h) Siena is one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany. The main sights are: Siena Cathedral, Piazza del Campo, Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia. Every year on 2nd July and 16th August in Piazza del Campo takes place the famous horse race the "Palio". Siena has been declared an UNESCO site. My suggestion is to park your car at "San Francesco" car parking, from there escalators bring you in the city centre.
I was transported to a medieval place that gave birth to one of the Doctors of the Catholic Church-- Catherine of Siena. I like the duomos, the cobblestone walks around town and piazza, and the memories of panforte and specialty biscuits are pulling me back to this lovely ancient town.
An amazing city, historically and architecturally with shops such as antique book shops that you would not expect to find in a popular tourist destination.
