How to save more money on your next flight?

Travelling to London? A short holiday in Langkawi or KL? Never pay more than you have to when booking an airline ticket! We’ve come up with 5 helpful ways you could save some money on your flight, so you can spend more exploring your destination rather than on getting there.

Tip #1: Flexible travel dates

Travelling at off-peak season is a great way to save money and have a more relaxing vacation away from the crowds. Finding the cheapest month is easy with Skyscanner’s ‘Cheapest Month’ search. Who knew you could snag roundtrip tickets for a quick getaway to Bali for under RM200? For a guide on how to view the cheapest times to travel, hop on over to this Skyscanner guide, and you’ll see cheap flights are only a few clicks away.

Tip #2: Flexible travel hour

As with the travel seasons, there are also peak and off-peak hours for flying. Flights departing or arriving in the wee hours of the morning or night tend to be cheaper than when flying during “normal” daytime hours. Once you’ve picked your destination and travel dates on Skyscanner’s site, use the slider on the left side panel to adjust your preferred time to fly, and watch as your flight results refresh accordingly.

Tip #3: Use your credit card to your advantage

Frequent flyers may know this tip, but even if you’re not one, it may be worth signing up for a credit card with a cashback programme or points system to earn rewards on big ticket items such as a flight. Some cards can get you cash back ranging from 0.3% to 0.5% of the ticket price, such as the Citibank DIVIDEND Card, the UOB JCB Platinum Card, and the DBS Visa Debit Card. Do beware of certain terms and conditions to see whether rewards or points are applicable for airline tickets, or if you may incur any credit card fees. Here’s also a list of top Malaysian credit card promotions and deals for overseas travel.

Tip #4: Book your flights in advance

Think about booking your flight anywhere from 3 to 6 months before your travel date, as prices tend to go up the longer you wait and nearer the travel date. Cheap last-minute tickets are a myth! Booking in advance is the real way to go. What’s more, we’ve looked at the data, crunched the numbers, and come up with Skyscanner’s guide to booking cheap flights at the right time. When is the best time to book, you ask? Well, check it out and get planning now!

Tip #5: Connecting vs direct flights

Flights with longer layovers or multiple connections tend to be cheaper than direct flights. If you don’t mind spending some extended time in airport terminals or having to take an extra flight, then this may be a money-saving option to consider. Long layovers or multiple connections may not be a bad thing either—if the wait is long enough, you may even have time to get out of the airport and sneak in an extra mini-vacation!

Plan your holiday and book your flights using the Skyscanner mobile app on your iOS or Android gadgets. Use one app to compare the flights from many airlines and online travel agencies to save your time searching the cheapest flights to any holiday destinations. Feeling lost?
