When asked about the location of Cyprus, many people are generally confused about its regional classification. It is a member of the European Union, even though its location lies below Turkey, with Syria and Lebanon as its neighbours across the Mediterranean Sea. The terrain of Cyprus as an island in Western Asia, however, makes it a beautiful country to visit. Tourists commonly agree that Cyprus makes a pleasing getaway spot with all its breathtaking beaches, interesting culture, and warm hospitality.

One interesting fact about Cyprus is that was once a part of ancient Greece. This came about in the late Bronze Age when early Greeks settled in the island around 1400 BCE. Their influence left a lasting heritage to the people despite the coming of more colonisers such as the Assyrians and Alexander the Great. The Ottoman Empire followed soon after, which added a Muslim element to the culture of Cyprus. Such legacy is still noticeable even up to the present, which makes a visit to Cyprus a compelling destination for tourists.

What to see & do

Cyprus, a site of major ancient civilisations, makes an intriguing country to visit. One can set off the Pafos Archaelogical site founded in the 4th century BCE, which is famous for its ruins and the ornate and colourful mosaics that tell different stories in the Greek mythology. Those exploring the area can also find the temple of Aphrodite, the stunning residential structures called the Villa of Theseus and the House of Aion, and the magnificent Saranta Kolones Fortress, a famous military edifice which now lay in ruins.

Kyrenia Castle, another fascinating historic monument, is a place to look forward to seeing. It was first built by the Byzantines with other conquerors, such as Richard the Lionhearted and the Ottoman Turks adding their own embellishments. Those going here can enter through the stone bridge and enter various landmarks such as the Chapel of St. George, two small museums, and the dungeons.

Old structures might crumble, but they can be an exciting sight such as one will see in Agios Lazaros. Built on the site where Jesus said to have resurrected Lazarus, the church offers a marvellous welcome with its Byzantine architecture, as well as Latinate and Orthodox touches. The Muslim heritage of Cyprus is also visible in its mosques. The Selimiye Mosque makes a fascinating landmark due to its French Gothic ornaments dating back to the time before the Ottomans came. When they arrived, two minarets were built on the roof with the contents stripped.

Those interested to learn more about Cyprus can head on to the museums. One of them is the Pierides

Archaelogical Foundation, which displays several artefacts from all over the country. The highlights of a visit here include the exhibit of the ceramic howling man, among many others. From here, one can visit the Cyprus Museum, which houses more relics, from terracotta votive figures to limestone lions and sphinxes, as well as the statue of Aphrodite who is called the 'Goddess of Cyprus.'
