Cheap flights from Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, the land of ancient cultures and a rich wildlife, makes one of the most exciting destinations in South Asia. It lies just off the tip of India, with the waters of the Laccadive Sea lapping at its shores. Travellers going to this island country will be charmed by its variety of natural sights, which can be amazing to behold, especially in the national parks where the elephants and other wild creatures roam free.

With eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, Sri Lanka is like a super-country compared to other island nations. Its heritage span across thousands of years even before the colonisers came down from their ships. Its beaches are also wonderfully welcoming without the crowds tramping on the sand. The food is often flavoured with coconut and spices and the refreshing tang of its tea also beckons, making a trip to this country formerly called Ceylon an attractive prospect for those who have not been here yet.

Where to go

Visiting the ancient cities of Sri Lanka is a must when visiting the country. The ruins of the royal complex of Anuradhapura are one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the region due to its architectural splendour. There are the great red brick towers, crumbling temples, and massive dagobas (shrines). Those going here will also marvel at the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred tree tended by guardians for more than 2,000 years. The Abhayagiri Dagoba additionally makes a stunning sight in the forest, especially when glimpsing it through a gap of trees for the first time. It is a stunning monument about 75 metres tall, which pays homage to the works and deeds of Buddha. From here, one can then visit the Archaeological Museum, which is filled with a collection of artwork, carvings, and artefacts from Anuradhapura and other historic sites in Sri Lanka.

The national parks are also a necessary addition to the list of sites to visit. Minneriya National Park makes an astounding destination, with its wild elephants and numerous birdlife. The forest and wetlands here is also home to sambar deer, buffaloes, crocodiles, and more. After a sight of the elephants, one can then visit the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and see its stunning range of plant and animal life. Rare trees and various endemic species can be seen here, making it an important stop for ecotourists. One can also venture to the Horton Plains National Park, which provides hiking opportunities to Kirigalpotta and Totapola, two of the highest peaks in Sri Lanka.

When in the area, one can go on a trip to Muscat, which on average takes 4 ½ hours to reach through a direct

flight. This capital of Oman has a quiet charm, with its traditional domed structures and Arabesque designs. An elegant city with fine houses, one can explore around Muscat and visit the Sultan's Palace, Al Jalali Fort, and the Corniche, which looks beautiful with its latticed buildings and mosques. Other landmarks to see here are the Grand Mosque and the Mutrah Souq, which display Oman's proud heritage.

From Colombo, one can also fly to London through connecting flights. The journey might take some time, but the sights are worth it due to the various museums, galleries, and historical landmarks one can visit in this European capital. There is the British Museum, the Tower, and the Buckingham Palace to view, as well as a ride on the London Eye and a stroll through the city's well-maintained public parks.
