Flights from Geneva

Switzerland offers dozens of tourist activities to enjoy, from its icy slopes to its deep lakes. This is primarily one of the reasons why Geneva International Airport (Genève Aéroport to locals) is one of the popular gateways to Europe. It's located on the tip of the south-western part of the country, serving an average of more than 10 million passengers every year.

This port of entry, however, started as Cointrin Airport, a small hub for airlines flying from Berlin to Barcelona via the Geneva route. Flights going to Lyon and Paris also make up some of its original list of destinations. This changed, however, due to increasing demand in the 1930s. More airlines from other countries started landing and departing from Cointrin Airport. Further development was pushed in the 1960s, which paved the way to make Geneva International Airport one of the busiest air travel points in Europe.

Where to go

Tourists finishing up their trip in Geneva will be delighted to get to view other sights in Switzerland. There's Zurich, the largest city in the country, to explore. Apart from the museums and galleries, one must be able to watch the Knabenschiessen, a marksmanship contest every September. Tourists arriving around every second weekend of the month must make sure to watch as thousands of boys and girls, ages 12-16, shoot a modern rifle. This can be terribly exciting due to the amount of concentration and skill that the participants exhibit. After the elimination, the winner will be made King of the Marksmen for a day.

Another sight to experience in Zurich is its rose gardens in Rapperswil. More than 16,000 roses bloom every year in the Capuchin Monastery and the Schanz. Once travellers have stopped to smell the flowers, it's time to go to Schloss Rapperswil Castle which offers its sumptuously decorated rooms for seminars, meetings, and other events. Tourists visiting here will be enamoured of the luxurious atmosphere fit for formal gatherings.

Short Haul

Tourists on their way out to Switzerland can visit Montenegro. Nature is the highlight of the trip, as there are many astounding sights to admire. One of them is Skadar Lake, the largest one in Balkan Peninsula. It's a sanctuary for wild and endangered birds such as Dalmatian pelicans and pygmy cormorants. They thrive here along with over 200 other species, making Skadar Lake a paradise for bird-watching.

Hiking is also another activity to look forward to in Lovcen National Park. In here, tourists will see Mt. Lovcen, an important symbol for the Slavic people. Black beech trees abound here, with paths for walking and cycling after seeing majestic birds of prey, various reptiles, as well as brown bears and wolves.

Long Haul

Those considering long-distance trips should think about visiting Uruguay. A relatively unknown country until recently, Uruguay became a hotspot for tourists once they saw the beauty of the country. Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the major attractions. A colonial-era atmosphere still pervades the community with its cobbled streets and other landmarks illustrating its Portuguese and Spanish influences.

For those who love the beach, Punta del Diablo is a prime destination. Travellers who don't like crowds are advised to avoid the peak season starting from early December to late February. Doing so will let them enjoy the peaceful surroundings while indulging on light-hearted fun.

How to get out

Travellers leaving Switzerland for European destinations will find it easy to book flights. Some of the mainland airlines to be found here are Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Germanwings, KLM, Lufthansa, and Scandinavian Airlines.

Those going to North America can board flights from Air Canada and United Airlines. Tourists bound for Central or South America will have to look for connecting flights.

Travellers going to Asia and Africa, on the other hand, can look for Air China, EgyptAir, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Middle East Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, and Turkish Airlines.
