Flights from Pitcairn
Dare to visit one of the world’s true earthly islands of Pitcairn, a loosely group of islands scattered in the vastness of the South Pacific Ocean. It is out of bounds with all the major continents of the world, making the island a truly isolated case to visit. Despite the Pitcairn Islands’ immeasurable distance with most countries, it is under the British colony in the South Pacific and the most isolated British dependency. Said to be inhabited or frequently visited by Polynesian people during the earlier centuries, the island informally became home in 1790 to infamous mutineers of the Royal Navy ship Bounty led by Fletcher Christian. It was rediscovered by Britain, which eventually led to become a British colony in 1838. It is true that visiting the island in the first place is difficult, and so is getting out. Pitcairn Island remains to be one of the last unsoiled islands on earth, and getting here after all will be worth all the trouble.
Where to go
Of the four islands, only the Pitcairn is the inhabited one. In this island, you can let your thoughts wander freely in Adamstown, minus the judgmental looks from the population, which counts to less than 100 only. These were the descendants of the infamous mutineers together with their Tahitian companions. A lawless community at first, the situation on the island tamed down when John Adams, the last mutineer to avoid accident or murder, converted the women and children to Christianity. To eradicate traces of their whereabouts, they decided to burn and sink the ship into what is now famously called as the Bounty Bay. In the museum, a number of Bounty artefacts can be seen such as the Fletcher’s Christian bible, which was kept in a glass case in the museum. Present day Pitcairn now has a small community of social workers hired by the New Zealand government that includes teachers, nurses, and pastors.
You can also opt to visit the Henderson Island, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 because of its teeming endangered bird species. The Henderson Island is a classic example of a makatea, or a raised coral island. It is also Pitcairn’s largest island that has about 49 feet cliff dive. If you want to visit the island, an approval from the Pitcairn Island Council should is needed.
