The capital city of Taiwan, Taipei has two airports, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Taipei Sung Shan Airport (TSA). Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is the main airport, serving mostly international flights. Taipei Sung Shan Airport serves domestic flights and is also a military airbase.

Flights to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE)

Formerly known as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is located in Taoyuan, about 40 kilometres from Taipei. This airport features two terminals: Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The construction of Terminal 3 is in progress and is estimated to be completed by 2020.

From the city centre to the airport, the MRT (or Taipei Metro) takes about 50 minutes and costs TWD160 (RM21) each way. Depending on the traffic, taxis could take more or less time than the MRT. Taipei Sung Shan Airport is situated in Sung Shan District, in the heart of Taipei City. This airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Taipei features a humid subtropical climate and has the four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In July, which is the hottest month, the average temperature is 30 degrees Celsius, while in January, which is the coldest month, the average temperature is 16 degrees Celsius.

The best time to visit Taipei would be in autumn, which is from September to November. During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, and rains are not frequent.

The peak season in Taipei is during the summer months of July and August, but this may not be the best time to visit due to the crowds and sweltering weather. Come during the low season in April or May instead, when Taipei flights and hotels tend to be cheaper.

Things to do in Taipei

Taipei brims with beautiful attractions such as Taipei 101, National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and National Palace Museum. You can start to soak in the atmosphere by taking a stroll around Ximending, which is the busiest area in Taipei. Then, escape to nature at the Taipei Botanical Garden which is home to over 2,000 species of plants. Up for a hike? Scale Elephant Mountain for spectacular views of the city.

Your trip is not complete without a culinary tour in Shilin Night Market. The variety of street food will make you drool. Look out for the flame-grilled beef sprinkled with cumin and the steamed leek buns. And don’t forget the tasty xiaolongbao (soup dumplings)! If you can’t get enough of night markets, hop over to Raohe Night Market or Tonghua Night Market.

Once your feet and body gets tired, make a day trip to Beitou Hot Springs and enjoy a rejuvenating soak.
