The Abdullahi Yusuf International Airport, formerly known as the Galcaio Airport, is an international airport serving Galkayo, the capital of the north-central region, Mudug, in the country of Somalia. It is owned by the independent Government of Puntland, a public cum military airport that has acted as a buffer zone between the divided city's (Galkayo) two main divisions (North Galkayo administered by Puntland, South Galkayo administered by Galmudug). Taxes collected from the airport service are equally pieced between administrations, facilitating and working relations between the two regional authorities. It was in 2012 when the facility was named as such, in memory of the late Colonel Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, the former President of Somalia, who was born in the city. The airport is served by two airlines, namely the African Express Airways and Jubba Airways. Destinations include Aden, Berbera, Bosaso, Mogadishu, Nairobi-Jomo Kenyatta, Wajir, and Mogadishu. Two runways that are both 3,006 metres complete the airport, with one asphalted and the other dirt.
If travelling through the Abdullahi Yusuf International Airport, make sure to check out the available flights and schedules ahead of time and check what airlines mainly serve the airport. Also search for affordable and cheap flights since Galkayo is only a transit city – a gateway to other destinations in Somalia and in Africa. This means that travellers may (at times) take another flight out of the city or take another service (e.g. buses, taxis, car rental, and other land transportation) to their destination, requiring an allotment on the travel budget. Check out some reliable online sites offering bookings with airlines and cheap flights, like Skyscanner. Skyscanner is a trusted source of the most affordable and cheap flights today, with over 600 airlines to choose from.
Due to the size of the airport, only single terminal divided into arrivals and departures make the main building, with check-in counters on one side and bag carousels on the other. Passengers are expected to arrive from the taxi stations or through the lobby and are directed to submit to safety checks and luggage checks and are to proceed to the check-in counters. On the check-in counters, passengers are then expected to present their valid identification, passport, visas (if required), and other travel papers deemed important for travel.
