What to see in Colombo

From Colombo Fort, also the Central Business District of Colombo, visitors can visit colonial buildings and old historical sites such as the Independence Memorial Hall Square, Pettah Floating Market and the Old Dutch Hospital.

Many old historical sites have been revamped to modern public recreational spaces and shopping precincts.

The Gangaramaya Temple, one of the important temples in Sri Lanka, bears influences from Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture. Another tourist favourite is the Galle Face Green, an open area in the heart of the city along the Indian Ocean coast.

What to eat in Colombo

A typical meal in Sri Lankan costs of rice, curry, papadums, dry fish and various sweet meats. Fish curries are popular among the locals.

Be sure to try fish ambul thiyal, or sour fish curry with some steamed rice for an authentic experience. For a quick bite, go for the Kottu roti, a Sri Lankan “burger” made with spiced dough and different ingredients.

The wood apple juice is a thick smoothie made from the Sri Lankan fruit with a unique sour and sweet flavour.

Day trips from Colombo

Day tours are available to visit Galle and other surrounding towns. You can also travel down Madu River on a boat trip and observe stilt fishermen waiting for fish at Koggala.

The more adventurous travellers can try white water rafting at the Kitulgala rain forest. Animal lovers can watch whales at Mirissa or play with elephants at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.
