The capital city of Sri Lanka, Colombo is also a commercial centre and the gateway to the rest of the country. The city is served by two airports: Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and Ratmalana Airport (RML). Ratmalana Airport was the city’s first international airport. Since 1967, however, it has been replaced by Bandaranaike International Airport which currently serves as the main airport of Colombo.

Flights to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)

Most flights to Colombo land at Bandaranaike International Airport. Serving both domestic and international flights, this airport is the main hub for several Sri Lanka-based airlines, including SriLankan Airlines, Cinnamon Air, and Millennium Airlines. The airport has four terminals in total: two terminals for international flights, one terminal for domestic flights, plus one cargo terminal. Airport facilities such as duty-free shops, cafeteria, and currency exchange offices are also available.

Bandaranaike International Airport is located in Negombo, about 35 kilometres away from the city centre. A taxi ride from the airport to the city usually takes 40 minutes and costs around LKR1,800-2,000 (MYR42-47). Alternatively, you can ride Bus E3-187 for LKR130 (MYR3) or the airport shuttle service for LKR5,000 (MYR118). Flights to Ratmalana Airport (RML)

Located 15 kilometres away from Colombo city centre, Ratmalana Airport is the main hub for the country’s aviation training organisations. The airport serves only domestic flights from several cities in Sri Lanka. There are two terminals in Ratmalana Airport: one for international corporate jets and domestic flights, and the other for international regional operations.

There’s no bad time to visit Colombo. With a tropical monsoon climate, the city offers pleasant weather most of the year. You may, however, want to avoid travelling to Colombo during the monsoon months of June to September.

The peak season in Colombo runs from November to January. Throughout these months, you can participate in a number of Sri Lankan traditional celebrations, such as Diwali Festival in early November and Duruthu Perahera Festival in January.

If you want to travel on a budget, come in late May or early June. During this low season, you can score cheap flights to Colombo as well as the best deals for accommodation.

When it comes to tourist attractions, Colombo has a lot to offer.
