What to see in Colombo
From Colombo Fort, also the Central Business District of Colombo, visitors can visit colonial buildings and old historical sites such as the Independence Memorial Hall Square, Pettah Floating Market and the Old Dutch Hospital.
Many old historical sites have been revamped to modern public recreational spaces and shopping precincts.
The Gangaramaya Temple, one of the important temples in Sri Lanka, bears influences from Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese architecture. Another tourist favourite is the Galle Face Green, an open area in the heart of the city along the Indian Ocean coast.
What to eat in Colombo
A typical meal in Sri Lankan costs of rice, curry, papadums, dry fish and various sweet meats. Fish curries are popular among the locals.
Be sure to try fish ambul thiyal, or sour fish curry with some steamed rice for an authentic experience. For a quick bite, go for the Kottu roti, a Sri Lankan “burger” made with spiced dough and different ingredients.
