Garuda Indonesia, named after Garuda the holy bird of Hinduism and found in the country’s national emblem, is Indonesia’s national airline. It is headquartered in Tangerang, near Jakarta, and has its primary hubs at the Kualanamu International Airport, Ngurah Rai International Airport, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. Garuda Indonesia also has secondary hubs at the Juanda International Airport and Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Airport.

Garuda Indonesia was founded in 1947 as KLM Interinsulair Bedrijf and began operations in 1949 as Garuda Indonesian Airways. The airline currently has a fleet size of 144 aircraft operating flights to 133 destinations in both domestic and international destinations. In 2014, Garuda Indonesia had a 5-star airline rating by Skytrax, an international review firm and is now considered to be on the leading airlines in the world. The airline is also a member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance.

Garuda Indonesia currently operates flights in Malaysia from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and serves passengers through codeshare agreements with several airlines including All Nippon Airways, Bangkok Airways, Etihad Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Philippine Airlines and Singapore Airlines.

Garuda Indonesia offers its passengers various ways to check-in for flights. Aside from the standard airport check-in counters, Garuda Indonesia also offers online check-in through their official website and telephone check-in.

Telephone check-in is available from 24 hours up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure. Economy Class passengers who purchased online and all Business Class passengers on direct domestic flights are eligible to use this service. Business Class passengers on direct Jakarta to Singapore flights are also eligible.

The airline requires all passengers to check-in at least one to two hours before the scheduled departure time. Early check-in is available for certain travel classes. Some routes may require passengers to check-in earlier, so it is best to check with Garuda Indonesia or through your travel agent.

Baggage Allowances

Garuda Indonesia offers complimentary baggage allowance. The total allowance varies depending on flight route and booked travel class. For domestic flights, Economy Class passengers are allowed up to 20 kilogrammes, Business Class up to 30 kilogrammes and First Class up to 40 kilogrammes. For international flights, baggage allowance varies widely depending on the flight route. Economy Class passengers are allowed to check-in from 20 to 50 kilogrammes, Business Class from 30 to 70 kilogrammes and First Class from 50 to 64 kilogrammes. Each bag may not weigh more than 32 kilogrammes.

Members of Garuda Indonesia’s and SkyTeam’s frequent-flyer programme may have an additional baggage allowance.


Garuda Indonesia offers three types of cabin classes – Economy, Business and First Class. Availability of cabin classes depends on the flight route and assigned aircraft.

Economy Class passengers will experience the Best Economy Class according to SkyTrax in 2013. Seats in economy offered extra legroom, reclining seats with foot rest and equipped with USB and power outlets. Business Class passengers will have the added comfort of a 21-inch wide seat that has a seat pitch of 43 inches. Each seat is also staggered offering aisle access as well as comes equipped with personal storage and a 15-inch touchscreen monitor. For First Class, passengers will enjoy the privacy and comfort of individual suites. Each suite comes with a 22-inch wide ergonomic seat that converts into a fully-flat bed. The suite also comes with a hidden table, personal storage, an ottoman and sliding door for privacy.

In-flight Services

Garuda Indonesia offers complimentary onboard dining. Economy Class passengers will enjoy a selection of Indonesian, Western and Asian fare as well as an assortment of hot and cold beverages. Business Class passengers will be served fine dining crafted by top chefs from 5-star restaurants. For First Class, passengers will be treated to the finest meals prepared by an onboard chef. Meals will be accompanied with a wide selection of drinks. Light meals and snacks are also available throughout the flight.
