Flights to Guadeloupe | Compare Low-Cost Fares at Skyscanner

A group of beautifully shaped butterflies, most especially its two major islands, Guadeloupe seemingly flutters in place located in the eastern Caribbean and southeast of Puerto Rico. One of its major islands, the Grande-Terre or the eastern wing of the island, is a haven for beach lovers with its string of beach towns that offers a number of seaside activities such as surfing lessons to beach bars. Its twin island, the Basse-Terre or the western wing, is home to earthly elements, with the La Soufrière volcano as its crown jewel. Other islands are also a place of beauty of its own, with the Marie-Galante fronting the whole country as the biggest island, and the virgin island of La Désirade, with its natural and relatively untouched nature.

Majority of the attractions lies in the Grande-Terre Island. It is home to a number of notable and interesting places to visit in the island. The capital, Pointe-à-Pitre is the economic capital of Guadeloupe. Here, you can visit the Cathedral de St. Pierre et St-Paul. Unlike other churches that are visible with traditional arches, the church is supported by iron girders, which is intended to brace itself against earthquakes and hurricanes. This alone earned its moniker as the “Iron Cathedral.” Another place worthy of interest is the Musée Schoelcher or the Schoelcher Museum, which is mainly dedicated to abolitionist Victo Schoelcher. The museum showcases the art pieces that belonged to Schoelcher, and artifacts that relates to slavery. Another museum worthy of interest is the Musée St-John Perse, a three-level municipal museum dedicated to the renowned poet and Nobel laureate Alexis Leger, also known as the St-John Perse. It gives tourists the glimpse of a Creole period home, as well as the poet’s life and work.

If you want to enjoy nightlife in the island, you should head to Gosier. Gosier is one of the most interesting places to visit with its good selection of bars. Here, you can opt to go to Cheyenne, the most famous bar in Gosier. You can also check other bars such as the Cubano Lollapalooza, a free bar nightclub pretty much distinguished with its animated nature.

While in Grande- Terre, you should go to St. Anne, a very touristic nice town. Here, you can go buzz in at the open-air market, which is closely situated to the beach. While in here, you should not waste the opportunity to taste the grilled conch and coconut water for that refreshing island feel. You can also treat yourself to a number of local restaurants, and enjoy the town beach with its blue water and overall serene atmosphere.

How to get around within Guadeloupe

To reach other islands in the country, you can consider renting a car at the airport, since public transportation is unreliable. Beware while driving, as the smaller roads are often uneven and dangerous to navigate at. For convenience, you can opt to fly out via plane if you are going to Saint Martin or Saint Barthelemy.

How to get there

To reach Guadeloupe, you have to fly into the Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport. The airport is located approximately 2.4km north-northeast of Pointe-à-Pitre, on the island of Grande- Terre. The airport serves as the main hub for Air Caraïbes and Air Antilles Express, which flies from Fort de France and Saint Martin. Pointe-à-Pitre International Airport is also being served by other airlines such as Corsair, which flies from Saint Barthelemy.
