The Territory of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, also known as Cocos Islands or Keeling Islands, is a territory of Australia located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Christmas Island and midway between Australia and Sri Lanka. The territory is composed of two atolls and 27 coral islands, of which two – West Island and Home Island – are inhabited with a total population of approximately 600 permanent residents. The whole of the territory is divided between the North Keeling Island and the South Keeling Islands. The North is composed with a C-shaped Island atoll, while the South is made up of 24 islets, including Horsburgh Island, Direction Island, Prison Island, Home Island, Scaevola Islet, Ampang Minor, and many others.
