Where to go

Coral World Ocean Park

Inaugurated in the 1970s on the island of Saint Thomas, Coral World Ocean Park is a marine park that has since become one of the top attractions in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It utilizes an open-water system, in which water can freely flow in and out between the exhibits and the ocean. Exhibits in the ocean park include the Caribbean Reef Encounter, Marine Gardens, Shark Shallow, and a Stingray Pool, among others. There is also an Underwater Observatory Tower that goes 20 feet under the ocean, with glass windows so visitors can watch ocean life in its natural habitat.

Blackbeard's Castle

Blackbeard's Castle, formerly called Skytsborg Tower, is a National Historic Landmark located in the city of Charlotte Amalie on the island of Saint Thomas. The castle was built in 1679 by the Danes on the highest point on Government Hill. It served as a watchtower, from which the Danish soldiers could spot enemy shops, to protect the harbor and Fort Christian.

Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve

The Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve on Saint Croix contains the beach where members of the Columbus expedition first arrived on the islands during his second voyage in 1493. It is the only known site where Christopher Columbus set foot on what is now a territory of the United States. This was also the site where Columbus encountered a Carib Indian tribe, and where the first documented conflict between Native Americans and Europeans took place. The park and reserve preserves upland watersheds and mangrove forests, as well as estuarine and marine environments.

Most of the short-haul destinations from the US Virgin Islands are other islands in the Caribbean, such as Dominica, Nevis, Saint Barthélemy, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda. Dominica is a nice place to visit, especially for eco-tourists who are into hiking. Dominica offers opportunities to go hiking in the rainforest. Some of its other tourist spots include the Indian River in Portsmouth, and the world's second-largest boiling lake, located in Morne Trois Pitons National Park.
