What to see in Warsaw
Start exploring the capital of Poland by visiting Old Town, lined with reconstructed houses bearing Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic and neoclassical elements.
Visit the Royal Castle, which served the Russian Tsars and became the residence of the president in 1918. The current building is a copy of the original, which was blown up by the Germans in WWII.
Another great palace to visit is the Wilanow, an Italian Baroque villa used as a royal summer residence.
To understand more about Warsaw’s tumultuous past, visit the Warsaw Rising Museum and Jewish Historical Institute.
Other attractions include the Palace of Culture & Science, the Neon Museum, and the Chopin museum.
What to eat in Warsaw
A typical Warsaw dish is fried or boiled pierogi (filled dumplings or ravioli) filled with tasty fillings. There are savoury versions such as the ruskie (Russian) and Z Kapusta (cabbage) as well as sweet versions like Z Serem (sweet cottage cheese and raisins).
Hot stews are popular among the locals, such as Bigos (a stew with fermented cabbage, cuts of meat served with rye bread or potatoes) and Hot barszcz (a similar soup to Borsch made with beetroot and meat stock).
Other Polish cuisines include Rosol z kury (clear chicken broth), Placki Ziemniaczane (Potato Pancakes) and Kielbasa (sausage of the spiced and smoked variety).
Day trips from Warsaw
Gdansk is a Polish Port that reminds many of the Amsterdam Canal with its picturesque buildings lined up beside the waters.
The infamous Auschwitz Concentration Camp is easily accessible from Krakow, where visitors can see where the horrors dealt out by the Nazis took place. Also, do visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
