The Kingdom of Tonga, also known as the Friendly Islands, is a Polynesian sovereign state in the Southern Pacific Ocean. It is also an archipelago comprising of 177 islands, 52 of which are inhabited, with a total surface area of approximately 750 km2, scattered over 700,000 km. The nearby islands are Fiji and Wallis and Futuna to the northwest, Samoa to the northest, Niue to the east, Kermadec to the southwest, and New Caledonia and Vanuatu to the far west. The capital and largest city is Nukuʻalofa.

'Ene'io Botanical Garden - The 'Ene'io Botanical Garden is the first botanical garden in Tonga. It consists of 89,000 m2 of privately owned gardens and contains the largest and most diverse plant collection in the Kingdom. Personalized tours through the gardens, which contain over 100 plant families and 500 plant species, can be arranged. EBG also has ocean access to the private beach 'Ene'io Beach, which has a camping area.

Ha’atafu Beach Resort - The Ha’atafu Beach Resort in Tongatapu is a prime destination for families, couples, friends, or even lone travellers. Established in 1979, it is the longest established local family-owned beach resort, now on its second generation of family operation. Activities at the resort include recreational swimming and snorkelling, sailing, fishing, kitesurfing, surfing, diving, swimming with whales, and bird watching.

Talamahu Market - The Talamahu Market is the main market in Tongatapu. This is where the local farmers sell their fresh produce, ranging from fresh vegetables to seasonal fruits. The area upstairs is where local handicrafts, second-hand clothing, shoes, jewellery, and various items are for sale.

'Anahulu Cave - Located north of Fatumu village is a stalactite cave called 'Anahulu Cave. Visitors can swim in the underground freshwater swimming pool for a fee, or go on a guided tour deeper into the cave.

Hufangalupe - The Hufangalupe, meaning Pigeon's gate, is a natural land bridge on Tongatapu, formed by the collapse of the roof of a sea cave. The waves breaking near the entrance is a wonderful sight to behold. Nearby is a beach of the same name.

Direct flights from Tonga to Sydney take about five hours, to Auckland about three hours, and even less to Nadi. Sydney, Australia is home to the very iconic Sydney Opera House, and several nature-centred attractions such as the Taronga Zoo, Chinese Garden of Friendship, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, and Manly Sea Life Sanctuary.

Direct long-haul flights are not available from Tonga's main airport. There are flights to the international airport in Sydney, which has connections to Seoul, London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok, Dubai, Beijing, Shanghai, and other tourist destinations.

How to get out

The primary airport in Tonga is Fua'amotu International Airport, located on the largest island Tongatapu, about 21km from Nuku'alofa. The airport offers flights to Auckland, Nadi, Suva, Sydney, and to the other parts of the Kingdom ('Eua, Ha'apai, and Vava'u). The airlines operating out of Fua'amotu International Airport are Air New Zealand, Real Tonga, Fiji Airways, and Virgin Australia.
