Bucharest is the capital, largest city of Romania. It lays claim to being the cultural, industrial and financial centre of the country as well. Its communist history is also reflected in its block buildings and the Palace of the Parliament from where dictator Nicolae Ceausescu once ruled.

Best Time to Visit Bucharest

Bucharest has the highest temperatures amongst all cities in Romania. With that in mind, early summer (March to June) and Fall (September to October) are the best times to visit as the temperatures are pleasant for sightseeing.

The travel peak season is from late June to August so you may want to avoid that as prices for flights and accommodations generally increases during that time.

The Romanians celebrate traditional events throughout the year, especially in summer. In June, visit the Traditional Crafts Fair to see traditional rug weaving, embroidering and pottery molding. In July, join in the Bucharest of Old parade as a throwback to olden times where locals wear costumes dating back to the 1800s, enjoy traditional food and ride in horse-drawn carriages.

What to see in Bucharest

The Old Town is one of Bucharest’s earliest settlements with buildings dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. It has served as a centre of trade as well as a place to worship. Today, the area is restored and the cobbled streets are lined with bookshops, theatres, restaurants and cafes.

The gargantuan Palace of the Parliament is worth a visit, to see what remains of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s legacy. It also houses the National Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Romanian Athenaeum is the city’s most prestigious concert hall. The 19th-century building is designed by French architect Albert Galleron and is known for excellent acoustics and fine art.

What to eat in Bucharest

For mains, try a grilled eggplant salad with a few slices of bread or a rustic platter consisting of pork rinds, greaves, bacon, smoked sausages or meatballs with mustard, cheese, fresh tomatoes, stuffed eggs and fresh green salad.

Tripe soup and fish borsch are comforting soups to try. Mamaliga (cornmeal porridge), once the staple of Romanian peasants, is a local favourite today. Try palinka or tzuica - traditional spirits made with 40% or more alcohol made from distillation of plums.
