The Caribbean Netherlands is a group of three special municipalities of the Netherlands, also called BES islands. It comprises of the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba, all in the Caribbean, all classified as overseas countries and territories of the European Union. In total, BES islands occupy a total area of 328 square kilometres and have a collective population of 21,000. The capital and largest city of Bonaire is Kralendijk, of Sint Eustatius is Oranjestad, and of Saba is The Bottom.
Where to go
Washington Slagbaai National Park - Washington Slagbaai National Park is a reserve on the north-western part of Bonaire. It was established in 1969, the first nature reserve to be established in the Netherlands Antilles. The park offers adventure activities, including mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, and bird watching. If going to the park, never forget to bring along something to protect you from the sun, including sunscreen and a hat, water, and at least some snacks.
Sint Eustatius Carnival - Sint Eustatius, also called Statia, is known for its carnival. The Statia Carnival was founded in 1964 and has since been a part of the Statian culture. It is held on the entire last week of July, and entails lots of food, loud music, plenty of dancing, and a pageantry.
Saba National Marine Park - The National Marine Park of Saba covers about 13 square kilometres of the waters and sea bed surrounding the island. It was established in 1987 to protect the aquatic life within the park. Scuba diving is permitted, but only with guides from one of the three dive operators in the island. Notable features in the park are its many different species of fish like parrotfish, barracuda, black durgon, and Atlantic blue tang, as well as stingrays, turtles, spiny lobster, and sharks, soft corals, unusual natural formations such as the Pinnacles and a labyrinth, and underwater caves, tunnels, and rock walls.
From Caribbean Netherlands, travellers can fly off to Atlanta, Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, or Houston. Curaçao is known for its dive areas, such as the Superior Producer wreck, Newport, Beacon Point, Snake Bay, Barracuda Point, and Divers Leap.
If travelling to the mainland, make sure to go to Amsterdam, the capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. There you'll find plenty of historical and cultural centres and museums, such as the Anne Frank House, Rembrandt House Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, Hermitage Amsterdam, and Rijksmuseum. Unusual attractions include the Hash, Marihuana & Hemp Museum, Heineken Experience, and the Homomonument.

Serving Bonaire is Flamingo International Airport, also known as Bonaire International Airport. It is served by Arkefly, Delt Air Lines, Divi Divi Air, EZAir, Insel Air, and KLM, with flights to Amsterdam, Atlanta, Curaçao, Aruba, and Houston. Sint Eustatius is served by F. D. Roosevelt Airport, from where Winair operates scheduled passenger service to Saba and Sint Maarten. Serving Saba is Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, with flights to and from St. Maarten and Sint Eustatius.
