Flights from Jeddah

Jeddah, also sometimes spelled as Jiddah or Jedda , is a city in the Hijaz Tihamah region on the coast of the Red Sea. Jeddah is known as the major urban centre of western Saudi Arabia. It is also the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest sea port on the Red Sea, and the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh. Jeddah is an important commercial hub in Saudi Arabia due to the fact that its population is at 5.1 million.

For travellers looking for a way to visit Mecca, Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, which is Islam's holiest city. Able-bodied Muslims are required to visit Mecca at least once in their lifetime. Aside from Mecca, Jeddah is also a gateway to Medina, which is the second holiest place in Islam.

For travellers visiting Jeddah, it is one of Saudi Arabia's primary resort cities and was named a Gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network (GaWC).

Located 19km to the north of Jeddah is the King Abdulaziz International Airport, the gateway into and out of Jeddah and Saudi Arabia. It is the busiest airport of Saudi Arabia, and is the third largest airport in the Kingdom. The airport was named after King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the first monarch of Saudi Arabia.

Where to go

Old Coral Houses - In a struggle to preserve these structures, Jeddah’s old coral houses are in a sorry state. In the sea of dilapidated structures, the Naseef House used to belong to one of Jeddah’s most powerful trading families. Like the other structures here, they will bring interest in the way these prominent families have lived back in the day. Back in the 1980s, these building have been restored, but they weren't maintained since then. These structures are not officially open to the public, but the staff at Naseef House may be able to arrange access.

Souq al-Alawi - This market can be found in Al-Dahab Street and is the most extensive in the Kingdom. There are many traders and pilgrims here and the place is very vibrant both during the day and night. Travellers here should visit at sunset when the call to prayer fills the lanes.

Al-Tayibat City Museum for International Civilisation - This museum features four floors worth of artefacts and collections that range from Islamic manuscripts and old coins to stunning furniture and pottery. Travellers will not have a hard time absorbing the history in this museum as the exhibits are accompanied by good captions and information panels, as well as some dioramas. The museum prefers big groups of people and won't be open for viewing for fewer than 10 people. Travellers are encouraged to form a group.
