The Kingdom of Cambodia, also known as simply Cambodia and formerly called Khmer Empire, is a country in the southern area of the Indochina Peninsula in South East Asia. Cambodia is bordered by Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, and Thailand to the northwest. The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh.

Where to go

Preah Barum Reachea Veang Chaktomuk Serei Mongkol - The Royal Palace, Phnom Penh is a complex that serves as the royal residence of the King of Cambodia. There are four main compounds: the Khemarin Palace is on the north, the Throne Hall is on the central compound, the Inner Court is on the west, and the Silver Pagoda is on the south. The Royal Palace of Cambodia represents a fine example of Khmer architecture. Visitors can only explore the Silver Pagoda compound and the central compound.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - A museum in the capital called the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum was formerly a high school that was used as Security Prison 21, one of at least 150 execution centres in the country from 1975 to 1979. The museum is open to the public as a tourist attraction and, more importantly, as an educational site and a memorial.

Cambodian Cultural Village - The Cambodian Cultural Village is both a theme park and a museum located on the road to Siem Reap International Airport, 6km from the city centre. It features miniature versions of significant historical buildings and structures in 11 villages that represent various culture heritages of 19 races. Each village hosts live traditional performances, traditional ceremonies, circus, games, and more.

In less than two hours, a traveller can fly from Cambodia to Yangon, former capital of Burma. Yangon houses the magnificent Golden Pagoda, Sule Pagoda, Nga Htat Gyi Buddha Temple, and many other significant Buddhist temples. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with its Batu Caves, Islamic Arts Museum, Jamek Mosque, and Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is also reachable in nearly the same amount of travel time.

There are no long haul destinations from Cambodia. The farthest travellers can get from the airport is Osaka, Japan, which would take nearly six hours to reach. Still, Osaka is a prime destination, offering both traditional destinations such as the Osaka Castle and Nagai Botanical Garden and Sankō Shrine, and also modern commercial attractions like Universal Studios Japan, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, National Museum of Art, and Tempozan Ferris Wheel.
