Virgin Atlantic is a British international airline based in the United Kingdom. The airline is headquartered in Crawley, West Sussex in England and has operating bases at London Gatwick Airport, London Heathrow Airport and Manchester Airport.

Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 and had its inaugural flight in June the same year from London Gatwick to Newark Liberty International Airport. Since then it has grown to have a fleet size of 40 aircraft operating numerous flights to more than 25 destinations across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Virgin Atlantic expanded its flight network with the help of codeshare agreements with several airlines including Air New Zealand, Delta Air Lines and Singapore Airlines.

How to Check In

Virgin Atlantic provides several options to check-in for flights. It allows passengers to check-in online on the official website, through the official mobile app, straight at the airport and other special check-in locations such as at Disney Springs in Orlando and the Hong Kong or Kowloon MTR stations in Hong Kong. Virgin Atlantic also offers their Twilight Check-in service for passengers departing from Gatwick Airport.

The online and mobile check-in service is available 24 hours up to 70 minutes before the scheduled flight departure time. If checking-in at the airport, be sure to arrive at least 2 to 3 hours before the departure as check-in counters close 60 minutes before departure and in order to have ample time for security and immigration checks.

Baggage Allowance & Fees

Virgin Atlantic offers complimentary baggage allowance. Economy Class passengers are allowed to check-in one piece of luggage not exceeding 23 kilogrammes (50 pounds). Selected flights such as flights from the UK to India and Lagos and USA to India, South Africa and Lagos are allowed up to two pieces of luggage.

Premium Economy Class passengers can check-in up to two bags not exceeding 23 kilogrammes (50 pounds) for each bag. On flights from UK, US or Canada to India, passengers are allowed up to three bags. Meanwhile, Upper Class passengers can check-in up to three bags not exceeding 32 kilogrammes (70 pounds) each.

For all travel classes and flights, each bag should not exceed the maximum dimension size of 90cm x 75cm x 43cm.


Virgin Atlantic offers three types of cabin classes – Economy, Premium Economy and Business or Upper Class. Availability of these cabins will depend on the flight route and assigned aircraft for the flight.

Economy Class passengers will enjoy the relative comfort of the 17.5 to 18-inch wide seats that have a seat pitch of 29 to 31 inches. Premium Economy passengers will have the added comfort from wider seats that are 21 inches wide and recline with a seat pitch of 38 inches. Lastly, Business or Upper Class passengers will have the utmost comfort during the flight with 22-inch wide seats with a seat pitch of 79.5 to 82 inches. Business Class seats fully extend out fully-flat beds and in some aircraft have an open suite style seat.

In-flight Services

Virgin Atlantic offers complimentary onboard dining to all passengers in all cabin classes. Economy Class passengers will be offered high quality and nutritious food as well as a selection of beverages to complement the meal. Premium Economy and Upper Class passengers will be offered their choice of upgraded meals as well as access to a range of light snacks and quick bites throughout the flight.

Virgin Atlantic offers complimentary in-flight entertainment. All passengers will have access to an audio video on-demand system fully loaded with the latest movies, popular TV shows, a wide-ranging music library and a variety of games to keep your kids and kids-at-heart entertained during the flight.
