Auckland International Airport (AKL) is the main gateway to the city of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. It is also the biggest airport in New Zealand. The airport has two terminals: Terminal 1 operates international flights, while Terminal 2 serves domestic and regional routes. Both terminals are only 500 metres apart and they are connected via a walkway and the free airport terminal transfer bus.
The airport offers a wide range of dining options, from McDonalds and Subway to Pita Pit and Better Burger. In terms of shopping, the airport has a feature called The Mall, in which passengers can purchase duty-free products online and pick up the items upon arrival or departure.
Auckland International Airport is about 21 kilometres from Auckland city centre. To get to downtown Auckland, you can take the airport transfer service called SkyBus. The journey time is 40-60 minutes, and it costs NZD18 (RM50) if you book online. Taxis are available outside the arrivals area, and fares range from NZD38-75 (RM105-207). Alternatively, if you’re planning to drive around New Zealand, you can pre-arrange a rental car and pick it up at the airport.

Things to do in Auckland

If you love to walk, you could cross the city centre and go as far as Onehunga. Along this coast-to-coast walk, head up Mount Eden and One Tree Hill, and take in the city views from high above.
Back in the city, set aside time to spend in the Auckland Museum for a historical immersion. If you prefer, you could pop by the Auckland Art Gallery.
When you’re done with the city sights, take the ferry to Rangitoto Island to follow the Rangitoto Summit Track up New Zealand’s youngest volcano. Even further from Auckland, but worth a visit for stargazing lovers would be Aotea, also known as the Great Barrier Island. This island was assigned as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. As you can imagine, its night skies have a beauty that is indescribable.
Hangi is a signature of Maori cuisine. The food is prepared by being buried in an underground oven with hot rocks. Hangi meals comprise tender meat, be it fish, chicken, pork or lamb, with vegetables. After your meal, try New Zealand’s delicious hokey pokey ice cream which is essentially vanilla with honeycomb toffee.
