Cheap flights to Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), Vietnam

Hanoi has one international air hub called Noi Bai International Airport (HAN). It is the largest airport and the second busiest airport in the country, transporting more than 30 million passengers annually. Noi Bai is the main hub for Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Jetstar Pacific.

The airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 serves domestic flights exclusively. It was inaugurated in 2001, and later had an extension which was completed in 2013. It can accommodate up to 15 million passengers annually. Terminal 2, which serves international flights, was completed in 2012 and has a capacity of 10 million passengers each year. Passengers need to take a shuttle bus to transfer from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. The airport is equipped with facilities such as lounges, baby care rooms, eateries, shops, ATMs, currency exchange offices, smoking areas, and free WiFi.

Located in Soc Son District, the airport is approximately 35 kilometres away from the city centre. To travel between the airport and the city centre, you can take city buses 7 or 17. The journey is under an hour, and it costs VND5,000 (RM0.90). A metered taxi service is also available outside the arrival gates of both terminals. It takes around 30 minutes to get to downtown Hanoi and the ride costs around VND320,000 (RM57). There’s also an airport minibus that costs VND32,000 (RM6). For the most fuss-free ride, pre-book an airport transfer through Skyscanner before you go.

The best time to visit Hanoi is during autumn and spring, or more specifically, from September to November or in March and April. During these months, the weather is pleasant with an average temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius. The city has a high humidity and precipitation level especially during winter, which is from December to February. In summer, the temperatures are higher and it’s also the peak season in Hanoi. During this period, there’s a spike in Hanoi’s accommodation prices.

Things to do in Hanoi

The first thing to do in Hanoi is to visit the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this building is at the heart of ancient Hanoi. The flag tower of the citadel is 40 metres tall and has been there for over 13 centuries. As a symbol of Hanoi, the Imperial Citadel served as a political centre in the past.

Next, catch a water puppet show at the Water Puppet Theatre. You’ll be witnessing a form of Vietnamese traditional art as you enjoy folk tales and legends. Continue your sightseeing at the Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex, and don’t leave Hanoi without taking a walk along Hoan Kiem Lake.

While travelling in Hanoi, several must-try dishes are bun thang and pho. The former is rice vermicelli served with chicken, eggs, pork, and a delicious broth, and the latter is traditional Vietnamese rice noodles served with soup.
