HK Express Flights

Hong Kong Express Airways, or simply HK Express, is a Hong Kong-based low-cost carrier providing several scheduled air services to nine country destinations (23 cities) in Asia, with its main hub located at the Hong Kong International Airport. It has a fleet of 10 Airbus A320s, and goes by the slogan “Hong Kong's Low-fare Airline.” In its short history though, it can be traced that Hong Kong Express or the modern-day HK Express started out from Heli Hong Kong in 2004, which was originally a company flying charter flights over the city. It was then allowed to operate fixed-wing operations in the next years, and was granted to operate regional operations in the area using Embraer 170 aircraft. By 2005, it expanded operations and added flights to its roster, including routes to Koh Samui, Okinawa, Siem Reap, Taichung, Jhangzhou, and Ningbo. Further in 2006, it also added services to Chiang Mai and Chongqing. Later in 2006, about 45% of the company was bought off by HNA Group, the parent company of Hainan Airlines – enabling the group to operate and expand internationally via this venture.

By 2013, Hong Kong Express decided to transform and provide services as a low-cost carrier, renaming itself as HK Express. HK Express commenced its first flights October of 2013, to five destinations in Asia, adding more routes and aircraft up until the present. It also underwent various branding strategies, using various colours from blue and orange, to blue and teal, and then red and gold, now settling into purple and scarlet (since 2013).

Why Fly with Hong Kong Express

How to Check In

As of this writing, HK Express only allows its passengers, especially those flying from outside Hong Kong to check-in through the airport of origin. The airline advises its passengers to be at the airport at least two hours before the flight departure, in order to ensure that there is sufficient time to check-in. Travellers from within Hong Kong, meanwhile, may check in through the Hong Kong International Airport, or within the town via the Airport Express Train, through either Hong Kong or Kowloon stations. This method allows the traveller to check-in as early as one day in advance, or as late as 90 minutes before their scheduled departure time. The airline also enforces a priority check-in scheme, where travellers who are departing from the Hong Kong International Airport may take advantage of the priority check-in services. The said service is not free though, and can be purchased upon booking and buying tickets online.

Baggage Allowance & Fees

HK Express provides its passengers one free carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 7 kilogrammes and dimensions not exceeding 56 by 36 by 23 centimetres on certain sides. Anything in excess of maximum allowance will be denied, or can be checked-in at the check-in desks or at the boarding gates for certain fees. Moreover, the airline does not provide checked baggage allowances, so travellers who will be bringing in bags for check-in are to be charged with appropriate fees. Before packing, note of the various cabin and checked baggage restrictions, and make sure to bring a bag that will not exceed the size and weight limits so as not to hold up check-in at the airport.

Seating

HK Express' fleet is composed of an all economy class layout. The average seat pitch is 28 inches in a 3 x 3 configuration. There are limited number of seats called “Sweet Seats” however, with additional legroom that are for sale to guests who would want to enjoy better seat pitches. “Sweet Seats” passengers also get to enjoy the priority check-in service on the side, and will be seated at the very front of the near the cabin doors.

Inflight Services

HK Express offers in-flight meals and in-flight HK Express branded products for sale within the aircraft. The airline also offers their UO Magazine, the in-flight magazine of HK Express, as a complementary entertainment option for its passengers.
